How it grades: type plain pinyin — tone marks are ignored (NI HAO = nǐ hǎo), ü can be u or v, and near-misses pass. If you type a different real word, it tells you what you actually said. The system: SHÍ 10 · BǍI 100 · QIĀN 1,000 · WÀN 10,000 — China groups by 10,000. Quirks: interior zeros are spoken (105 = yī bǎi líng wǔ), and 2 before bǎi/qiān/wàn becomes liǎng: 23,500 = liǎng wàn sān qiān wǔ bǎi.

Mandarin grammar is famously friendly — the rules below are most of it. The tones do the heavy lifting, so 🔊 everything.

Word order = English

Subject–verb–object, no conjugation, no plurals, no the/a. WǑ YÀO CHǍOFÀN = I want fried-rice. If you can build it in English, you can usually build it in Mandarin.

Tones — the real grammar

Four tones + neutral: mā flat high · má rising · mǎ dip-and-rise · mà falling. Same letters, different words (mā = mum, mǎ = horse!). The typing checker ignores tones — your mouth shouldn't. Press 🔊, copy the melody, every time.

Negation: BÙ and MÉI

BÙ + verb = don't/not (BÚ YÀO = don't want, BÚ LÀ = not spicy). MÉI(YǑU) = don't have / didn't happen. When in doubt, BÙ.

Measure words — counting needs a shape

Pattern: number + measure word + noun.

LE — the "new situation" particle

Pop LE on the end when something has changed or completed: WǑ È LE (I've gotten hungry), WǑ BǍO LE (I'm full now), TÀI HǍOCHĪ LE (so delicious!).

Food-culture cheat codes

Call the waiter with FÚWÙYUÁN! — expected, not rude. Order street-style with LÁI… ("bring…"): LÁI YÌ PÍNG PÍJIǓ. Leftovers? DǍBĀO. Paying? Catch an eye and say MǍIDĀN.
